Bittersweet ...

When I was a young mom and my own Moms were still relatively young, Mother's Day was a happy Hallmark card celebration - cards, flowers, family dinners and brunches. As I moved into later years, the life experiences that tapped me on the shoulder made me realize Mother's Day was often more bittersweet than happy. I now cherish the fact I have, not only Mother's Day, but many other days in the year to spend with my children, grandchildren and both my mothers ...

Mother's Day is also a day when I think about ...

... those Moms who have lost a child ... through death, estrangement, or the selflessness of giving up one's child for adoption ...

... those children who have lost a Mom ... for all the same reasons ...

... those 'Moms to be' whose journey stopped at 'to be' ...

... those Moms who wanted to be a Mom but it never came to pass ...

For all of you, I  hope Sunday, the day of celebration for Mothers, is all that it can be for you ... and you are well loved by those you love ... nj ... xx

  1. NJ,
A great reminder that Mother's Day can be one of heartache for many. A miscarriage, a death, an estrangement ........... so many reasons! My own mother has been gone for 50 years this year. It is day to remember the ones who raised us. Thank you!

    1. Sorry to hear about your Mom, Meredith ... you lost her at a young age ... so hard. Yes, there are others in our lives who contributed to our growing process ... I had my Gram and an Auntie for whom I have very special memories ... sending hugs on this day of remembering ... nj

You are right, it can be bittersweet. This is our second Mother's day without Mum. Thank you :)

  3. I do miss those days of tissue paper flowers and macaroni glued to paper- but I do know I have been blessed to have experienced them.

Years ago when I first started blogging there were many women in blogland who longed to be mothers (two thankful did become them) and one who was losing their's at the time. We decided instead of Mother's Day posts this weekend to play a game called The Newly Red Game. Much like the Newly Wed Game, we asked our husbands questions after we had answered them ourselves. It turned out to be hilarious and so much fun. But, Why did we do this? Well because our friends told us how they avoided the computer the week before and after Mother's Day.

I'd like to say I can't imagine that feeling, but I can imagine a similar one. When our oldest was in the thick of some issues as a teen I avoided Facebook etc during all major holidays. Not the same but the idea is similar.

I have learned over the years as I have gotten older, that avoiding the topic on said days isn't the answer. But sometimes it can be.

    Happy Mother's Day NJ.

  6. Nora Jean, I like that your post salutes so many kinds of mothers. I rarely become sentimental on this holiday, but I do miss my mother every day. Motherhood is something that doesn't have an ending. My boys are men now, but I worry about them just as much as when they were little.

    Celebrate Your Day,
    Ella

  7. My heart goes out to all mothers today and may they all be blessed in some way as they think of their fondest memories whether of their children, their own mothers, and their grandmother's, sisters, etc. Hope your Mother's Day is blessed, NJ. Hugs, Windy

  8. ... and on similar but yet so different Mom's Day theme ... we're about to make a perfect Momma's Day gift ... we've had a hen valiantly sitting on eggs well past due date to no avail ... we've just picked up 5 new babies ... currently peeping away for their Momma. Under the cover of darknesss, we'll slip the old eggs out and the new babes in ... it is a good Moms Day indeed :)) ... nj

  9. Hi Nora Jean,

I agree, that day can be bittersweet, or even forget the sweet, for those of us who never had a nurturing maternal parent.

    Hugs,

  10. What a lovely post...it is so true, that not everyone has 'happy holidays'. I am fortunate, I grew up in an atmosphere where any reason is a good idea for a celebration...and the tradition continues....hugs abby

  11. As we age, we try to make everyday happy, and not just chore, work etc. We now have the time, being retired. Any celebration also comes with the knowledge of others who are no longer there to celebrate it with us, but the fond memoires of times past.
